Nowadays, many people ask whether pets can be transported by air. The answer is yes, but not every airline will accept pets.

 

Procedures for Air Transporting Pets:

 

I. Airline Regulations:

 

  1. Selection of the Aircraft: An aircraft transporting pets or live animals must be equipped with an oxygen cabin, but such aircraft are not available every day. Therefore, it is advisable for customers to contact by phone in advance when booking. At the same time, special changes caused by uncertain factors cannot be excluded.
  2. Pet Death: When consigning pets, the airline requires that in case of the pet’s death, the consignor shall bear the cost at their own expense, and the airline does not provide insurance services.
  3. Pet Certificate: When consigning a pet, the airline requires the customer to provide a “Quarantine Certificate for Animals Leaving the County”. If there is no such certificate, the consignment will not be allowed.
  4. Outer Packaging of the Pet: When consigning a pet, the airline requires that the outer packaging of the consignment must be a special pet box, which can be an iron cage, plastic box, wooden box, etc. The key is that the outer packaging should be sturdy and breathable, and a chassis should be provided to prevent the pet’s urine from leaking out of the box during the flight.

 

II. Preparations for Customers before Consigning Pets:

 

  1. Customers should first assess whether their pets are suitable for flying. Some reactions that humans have can also be reflected in pets.
  2. Let your pet drink some water and have relevant pet food before consignment. It is best to provide food, water, and a towel (for wiping urine) before handing over the pet to us.
  3. Animal Quarantine Certificate and Disinfection Certificate for Transport Equipment. After determining the itinerary, take the pet and the health immunization certificate to the animal and plant quarantine authority for a health check. One day before departure, the quarantine personnel can issue an animal quarantine certificate and a disinfection certificate for the means of transport after inspection.
  4. Take the pet, the special aviation box, and the above three certificates to the Shanghai Animal Health and Epidemic Prevention Supervision Institute on the day of departure for quarantine supervision and inspection. After passing the inspection, the epidemic prevention supervisor can affix the official seal of epidemic prevention supervision on the quarantine certificate.

 

Note: Cage and Box. The airline requires that small pets (weighing less than 15 kilograms) use a special aviation box for pets. The opening needs to be tied with iron wire, and a pre-formed packaging bag should be used and drilled with holes. Medium and large pets (weighing more than 15 kilograms) should use a wooden aviation box lined with barbed wire, which is firm and reliable.
